Well it's that time again, when all good citizens make their annual donation to help run our country. For some, no big deal, for others; well that's where I come in. The "tax guy."
One thing that may be of ineterest, if you bought a "new" car this last year, that's a car where you are the first owner of it, you may have a tax benefit coming. If you do not itemize, you can still get an additional deduction to your standard deduction of the sales tax paid on the car.
Another item that comes up a lot, any 'gift' given to charities (Salvation Army, Church, etc) must have a paper trail to be allowed. That can be a canceled check, documented receipt from the recipient, etc. If there is no receipt and you are audited, it will be disallowed. Also, I've had questions about the dating of it. If a check is written and dated prior to Jan 1, 2010, it's good, no matter when the cancelation is. (If the check is written Dec 30 and canceled in August, that might be questioned, but if canceled in Jan, no problem.)
If you have any questions, let me know. Otherwise
have a safe and happy holiday and may you and yours be blessed with good health and happiness in the new year!
Welcome to Tax Season 2010 - may there be peace in your life and not the IRS!!!
